HOW TO BEGIN

1) Find out from older members of the family the full names of parents, grandparents as far as is known. Find out about their occupation, military service, schools attended. If not born in New Zealand find out when they arrived or on board which ship and whereabouts they came from.
2) Get photocopies of documents, news clippings and other memorabilia held by other members of the family.
3) Get copies of Birth, Marriage and Death certificates. These will enable you to go back one generation at a time. They will also confirm the dates and places events took place.
4) The International Genealogical Index (IGI) contains details of over 37 million people. They are organised by countries and then counties or states. Check for your ancestors name.
5) The Genealogy Research Directory (International) is published yearly and lists families that are being researched and the researcher’s name and address. Check to see whether somebody else is researching the same names as you. It also lists the names and addresses of professional researchers and record repositories.
6) If you know dates of family events check local newspapers for reports. Obituaries are especially useful.

7) As you go along record the information.
